It can be difficult to find comfortable dress boots for large calves. All styles in stores and elsewhere online are difficult to get on because the shafts are too small. Some styles grow increasingly uncomfortable through the day because they are too tight. A few style and fit tips may be all you need to find the perfect pair of boots.
Boots as Accessories
Boots, like belts, are a key fashion accessory regardless of dress size. They can add the finishing touch to a plain skirt and sweater outfit. A pair of fashion boots can turn a classically styled dress into a fashion-forward outfit.
Dress Boots for Large Calves
There is no standardized measurement for a "wide calf boot." The boot shaft on a B-width standard calf boot usually has a calf measurement of about 14 inches. Our "wide calf boots" can be found with calf measurements anywhere from 16 inches to 21 inches.
All of our wide calf boots are also available with a wide width shoe as
well. This is important for many plus size women. However, women don't wear
a wide width shoe and until recently these women had to suffer along with a
too-wide shoe in order to have a boot that fit their larger calf. In recent
years, we have gotten our boot manufacturers to custom make our wide calf
boots with medium width foot sizes.
Styles
Dress boots for large calves are all available on our site since our boot manufacturers are enabling us to provide the largest selection on the internet. Most boots have a 14-inch to 15-inch tall shaft. The width of the boot may be the same at the top as it is at the bottom, like a stovepipe. In some boot styles the boot might flare out from the ankle with the widest portion of the boot being around the top.
One key to selecting a boot style is to find a shape that fits your leg best. For example:
- Lace-up – Back-laced or front-laced boots can be widened or narrowed by adjusting the laces. This is a great style for a wide calf leg that needs a boot to be pulled in around a narrow ankle. These types are made with zippers as well so that you don’t need to lace and unlace them each time.
- Crunch – Some boots are soft enough to push down toward the ankle. This "crunching" of the boot provides a more casual look. It also moves the boot down the leg, making the boot more comfortable for a larger calf.
- Inside zipper – A long zipper on a boot allows the boot shaft to be opened wide enough to insert the foot, pull the boot shaft around the leg and zip the boot up easily.
- Stretch – Stretchy fabrics provide additional room in a boot. Some boot styles are now made with a combination of leather and stretch, which can provide a little ease where necessary. Boots which are constructed completely of stretch fabric are excellent for the woman whose calf is much fuller than average, but not full enough to require an extra wide calf boot.
Sizing
An accurate calf measurement is important to selecting a well-fitting boot. Measure the largest calf at the widest point using a tape measure. A string can be held around the calf to measure, with the string then measured with a ruler or yardstick. When selecting a boot for a large calf:
- Always measure your calf before purchasing. The terms used to describe the width of the calf may be different for each of our suppliers. A wide calf boot made by one manufacturer can be the same width as an extra wide calf made by another manufacturer. - Please remember to order your shoe size after considering the leg wear that will be worn with the boots. A boot can feel great with pantyhose but be too tight when worn with socks. As a result, you will need to order a ½ shoe size larger or a wider width than you normally wear if you plan to wear warm socks in them.
- A shoe repairman can stretch a leather boot if it is slightly too small or tight. He can also usually enlarge the circumference of the boot if a larger elastic gusset or more leather is added.
